THEPompano Catch 🐟

Here's something to think about next time you're at the beach: sound travels about four times faster underwater than through the air. Blue whales take full advantage. Their calls can carry across entire ocean basins, hundreds of miles, to another whale just trying to mind their own business.

So while you're standing in the ankle-deep water on Saturday morning, there's a decent chance some whale a few hundred miles out is yelling at another whale through the same water you're standing in. Nature's group chat.

Meanwhile, I have 991 unread text messages.

Anyway, here's what's happening in Pompano this week. 🐟

📰 LOCAL NEWS

🛹 $1.8M Skatepark Coming to Community Park

📅 Opening later this year📍Pompano Beach Community Park · 820 NE 18th Ave 💰 Free · City-funded

Pompano is finally getting a proper skatepark. The city is pouring $1.8M into Community Park for a full build-out: concrete bowls, street features, and room for BMX and scooters too.

Translation: no more hauling the kids to Boca or Lauderdale when they want to skate.

Shaded seating and the playground are right next to it, so siblings don't have to fight for your attention while someone's learning to drop in. Bring water. It gets hot out there.

🚗 Parking: Free on-site lot off NE 18th Ave. 👉 parks.pompanobeachfl.gov

🏖️ New Beachfront Kiosk & Restrooms Opening This Spring

📅 Spring 2026 📍 Oceanfront near the Pier 💰 Free

Good news for anyone who's ever done the full sprint from the sand back to Atlantic Blvd looking for a bathroom: the new public restrooms by the Pier are almost done. A concession kiosk is going in next to them, which means cold drinks and snacks without breaking down the whole beach setup.

A genuine upgrade for every beach day going forward.

🚗 Parking: Same oceanfront lots. ParkMobile works at the meters. 👉 pompanobeachfl.gov

🚲 The Bike Academy: Mobility That Changes Lives

📅 Running year-round 📍 Our Father's House Soup Kitchen · 2380 MLK Blvd 💰 Free to participants · Donations welcome

Our Father's House on MLK does way more than most people realize. On top of free weekday lunches, they run a bike program that refurbishes donated bicycles and puts them in the hands of neighbors experiencing homelessness. For someone without a car or steady bus money, that bike is often the difference between making a shift and losing a job.

Got an old cruiser gathering dust in the garage? They'll take it. Got a Saturday morning? They'll put you to work.

Easy win.

🚗 Parking: On-site lot. 👉 ofhsoupkitchen.org to donate or volunteer

🐟 HIDDEN CATCH

🏴‍☠️ Captain Jack's Tiki Bar

📅 Open Daily · Happy Hour Monday–Friday, 3:00–7:00 PM 📍 Captain Jack's Tiki Bar · Beachside behind Royal Vista Resort, Pompano Beach 💰 No cover · Cash and card accepted

Slip behind the Royal Vista and you'll find one of Pompano's most under-the-radar hangouts sitting right on the sand. Captain Jack's has been pouring tropical drinks and feeding hungry beachgoers for years — a no-frills, flip-flops-welcome tiki bar that locals have quietly kept for themselves. Tourists walk past it every day and never notice. That's the charm.

The drinks lean into the classics — frozen painkillers, rum punches, ice-cold drafts — and the kitchen window turns out exactly what you want with a cold one in your hand. Live bands roll through on the regular, so check their socials before you head over.

Pompano's intimate monthly concert series returns tonight with The Harden Project — the soulful acoustic duo of Ja'Nia Harden (singer, composer, author) and John Harden (musician, composer, arranger). Think NPR's Tiny Desk energy in a Black Box theater three miles from your house.

Small room. Up close. The kind of show where the band can see your face and the music hits harder because of it.

🎉 JUST OPENED

🥯 Bagels & Co. | Pompano's Newest Bagel Shop

📅 Open daily, 7 AM – 3 PM 📍 Park Plaza · 1162 N Federal Hwy 💰 Walk-in · (954) 388-5859

A Brooklyn-style bagel shop just landed at Park Plaza. Over a dozen varieties (everything, cheddar habanero, French toast, blueberry) plus a whole wall of schmears that goes way past plain. Bacon cheddar. Black truffle. Honey nut. Sriracha scallion. One called "cookie monster."

Breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and La Colombe coffee round out the menu.

Good news for anyone who's been driving to Delray or Hollywood for a proper everything-with-lox.
